Counting Like a Computer

Computers store everything in binary, so the decimal number 1010 is written as 10102. Storage grows in powers of two: 210 bytes equals 1,024 bytes, or one kibibyte, and 220 bytes equals one mebibyte. Knowing the difference explains why a new 1 TB drive shows less space in Windows than the box promises.
